Little is known about Lodewijk Tieling. He became a ‘poorter’ (citizen) of the town of Amsterdam on 29 May 1696, where he registered as a painter.1 He was buried in that city on 3 November 1726. He generally signed his works with a round ‘L’, which has sometimes been read as a ‘C’, and his last name has sometimes been read as ‘Fieling’, which added more confusion to this little known master. Matters of attributed are further complicated by the recent discovery of the painter Catrina Tieling (born 1670), possibly the wife or a sister of our Lodewijk.2

It is now know where Tieling received his artistic education, but his works resemble the Italianate landscapes of Nicolaes Berchem, Karel du Jardin and Adriaen van de Velde, the leading masters in the field, whose landscapes are imbued with the warm sunlight of the Mediterranean, highly popular with collectors during the second half of the seventeenth century, when representations of the typical Dutch polder landscape, pioneered by Esaias van de Velde, Jan van Goyen and others, fell out of favour.

Like the present recently discovered canvas, his works were frequently rather ambitious in size, and often have carefully depicted cattle. His best known work, known as The Ark, is preserved in the Metropolitan Museum in New York (fig.).3 More comparable to our work is the painting Italianate Landscape with Riders and Cows in the Worcester Art Museum (fig.).4 Further paintings are preserved in the Nationalmuseum, Stockholm and a pair of landcapes is in Riga.
